Where do you recommend getting an RC car? I was hoping these were one of those "serious" RC cars that you could customize with different parts and stuff, rather than something you get at Toys R Us for 19.99.

ebay or one of the rc forums. rctech.net is a pretty diverse place to buy on their classifieds.
Traxxas, Team associated, hpi are top brands that are 'serious'. Everything is replaceable and upgradable.
Look at the hobby sites (or manufacturer sites) to see which models you like. Then look for them on ebay.
I have a traxxas mini rally (brushless-electric) for reference i picked up on ebay for 140. RTR-ready to run. When doing ebay though, expect to find a few little problems if the seller isnt the most knowledgeable. I ended up having to replace a steering servo, but it was still good overall.
If you see something you like, send it my way, and ill give you feedback on it and let you know the pro's and cons for it.
